It really has turned out to be a "drop them right there" pig gun and a hell of a lot of fun at the range.Weaver Classic 30mm High Mount Rifle Scope Rings, Matte Black, 2 Pack. I would never trust my son's life to a cheap piece of glass and I hope this is a lesson that he has learned when he has a son. I know their are people that think we are crazy because we spent more on a scope than the price of the rifle, but its well worth it on a gun that shoots accurately when you're after dangerous game. They make these guns a pleasure to use for hunting or range work when you're in you're late 40's and you're eyes just don't work that well with these mediocore military iron sights. I've looked at both the Burris and Leupold sccout scopes and you really can't go wrong with either on a military type bolt action. However, there are other European loaded rounds in the 196 gr range (privi partisan and selier and beliot)that also take the 8mm to it full potential. We had good luckwith Igman 170 gr sp, (it really does drop them right there). Prior to the conversion, my son got his first pig (on his first hunting trip), aproximatley 150lbs with this gun, using the military open sights and factory stock (which at the wrist was so thick it was like using a 2x4). I recommend Boyds to anyone that needs a new stock (they are great and ship very quickly).
Was I doing the project over again I'd consider it. Must admit, though, that that S&K mount looks nice. Simply installed the mount as per directions, installed the 'scope, tightened the h*** out of everything-well, OK, I was a little gentle with the brass tension screws, for fear they'd crumble, but made 'em tight for brass anyhow-and headed out for the range. I can keep my 200 grain Accubonds in a 4" circle or less, at 200yd. The B-Square mount is working fine for me. Left the M-48 as an 8mm, and it's too heavy for Cooper's august standards, so officially, mine is a "pseudo-scout." But IMHO, the heft of the rifle helps with the 8mm's not inconsiderable recoil.Īnd if I just followed The Colonel's standards, it'd be his rifle. Also added a Timney trigger-I don't like 2-stage triggers. Used the B-Square mount and a Leupold Scout 'scope.
OldBillThunderchief-I did similar w/a M-48, and am quite happy w/the results.
